When most people picture Gulf Shores, they see sugar-white sand, warm Gulf water, beach umbrellas, and families arriving for a much-needed vacation.

That is certainly part of Gulf Shores—but it is not the whole story.

Beyond the beach is a growing Alabama community where people work, attend school, open businesses, raise families, retire, invest, and build lives that continue long after vacation season ends.

That is the Gulf Shores I want to share through Living Alabama with The Alabama Agent.

Life Beyond the Beach

Living in Gulf Shores is different from spending a week here.

Visitors may plan their days around the beach, restaurants, and attractions. Residents begin to notice the everyday things: which roads become crowded during peak season, where to take a quiet walk, how the community changes during the winter, and which local businesses remember their customers.

Gulf Shores offers the energy of a popular coastal destination, but there are still places where life feels slower. You can find peaceful neighborhoods, stretches of nature, walking and biking trails, local parks, and quiet mornings when the Gulf seems to set the pace for the whole day.

The city maintains several parks and green spaces, including Meyer Park, Johnnie Sims Park, Little Lagoon Pass Park, Wade Ward Nature Park, and Wetlands Park. Gulf Shores also has its own city school system and community programs that remind us this is not simply a resort—it is a hometown.

A Community That Changes With the Seasons

One of the most interesting things about Gulf Shores is how its personality changes throughout the year.

Summer brings families, beach traffic, and the excitement of vacation season. Fall brings events such as the National Shrimp Festival, along with beautiful weather and a slightly slower pace. Winter welcomes snowbirds and longer-term visitors who return year after year. Spring brings another fresh wave of activity as the coast prepares for summer.

Living here means learning to appreciate all of those seasons—not just the weather, but the rhythm of the community itself.

It also means discovering that some of the best Gulf Shores moments are the simplest ones: an early walk before the beach gets busy, a sunset over Little Lagoon, a conversation with a local business owner, or an ordinary weekday that somehow still feels a little like vacation.

Choosing the Right Gulf Shores Property

There is no single version of “living in Gulf Shores.”

For one person, it may mean a condominium close to the Gulf with access to amenities and the potential for vacation-rental income. For someone else, it may be a primary residence in a quieter neighborhood farther from the beach. Others may be looking for a second home, an investment property, a retirement home, or simply a smaller place with less upkeep.

That is why buyers should look beyond the view and ask how they intend to use the property.

Important questions may include:

• Will this be a primary residence, second home, or rental property?

• Are short-term rentals permitted?

• What are the condominium or homeowners association fees?

• What does the association’s master insurance policy cover?

• Will separate flood, wind, or contents coverage be needed?

• How could insurance costs affect the overall monthly budget?

• What maintenance responsibilities come with owning property near the coast?

A beautiful property can still be the wrong purchase if its rules, expenses, insurance requirements, or location do not fit the buyer’s plans.

That is where my experience in both real estate and insurance gives me a different perspective. I naturally look beyond the number of bedrooms and the color of the countertops. I want buyers to understand the property, the location, and the responsibilities that come with coastal ownership before they make a decision.

Why Gulf Shores Is Calling Me

Gulf Shores is not new to me, but it is becoming a new chapter in my life.

My husband and I have spent time here, made memories here, and talked about what it would be like to make the coast a larger part of our everyday lives. Now that conversation is becoming real.

As I begin spending more time in Gulf Shores, I want to share the community honestly—not only the attractions people already know, but also the neighborhoods, businesses, people, practical considerations, and quieter places that make it feel like home.

You will see Gulf Shores through my eyes as I settle in, learn new routines, meet more local business owners, and experience the difference between visiting the coast and actually living here.

I do not intend to pretend that I already know every hidden corner or have every answer. I would rather take you along as I discover more of the community for myself.

Living Alabama on the Gulf Coast

Living Alabama is about more than finding places on a map. It is about understanding what makes an Alabama community feel like home.

Sometimes that means a small North Alabama town surrounded by farmland and familiar faces. Sometimes it means a coastal community where the landscape, pace, and population change with the seasons.

Gulf Shores is both a destination and a hometown. It offers the beauty people travel hundreds of miles to experience, along with the everyday relationships and routines that make people choose to stay.

And for me, it represents a new beginning.
